hi, have two questions for you guys.....
today i looked at a to-30 with a wagner loader
attached. i know the to-20's were notorious for
the engine block cracking between the cylinders, was that flaw corrected with the z-129
engine ??? also, what can you tell me about
wagner loaders? this one has a single hyd
cylinder centered behind the bucket and two
control levers on right side of loader near where
you sit. what kind of test can i do to be sure the
loader and tractor are in good working order ???

thanks, steve

I have the to30 and loader. I can't help you with the reliablity of the blocks as I haven't encountered the problem so either I've been lucky or the answer is that they fixed the problem. The loader is the same as mine. The center ram bucket has provided me with good service for the past 4 years. The only weak points with the loader are these:
1) the bucket ram on mine broke where the square end with the mounting hole that mates with the bucket is (follow that?). If you look at the design, all the bucket weight is trying to flex the ram shaft at that point. The square end is threaded on and is smaller than the shaft thus a weak point.
2) the loader rams are single acting - thereby no down power. The loader drops by gravity only. The bucket is however, double action.

Lifting the loader and leaving it should probably show a sloooow drop of both the loader and bucket over several minutes. Worry if it's faster.

The tractor, although very tough is famous for the front end twisting backwards, putting a bow in one or both radius rods. When this happens the frame that supports the front axle twists slightly causing the loader pump drive shaft to rub on the inside of the axle pivot. Eventually this will snap off the drive plate bolted on the crankshaft pulley. It is preceded by lots of squeeking. The steering bushings/shafts coming out of the gear case generally run dry and wear. Look for slop there when you turn the wheel. Check the 3 point hitch. Lift it up and watch for its drop time with the engine off.

Drive the tractor. If its not blowing smoke, if there's no water in the oil or on the ground under it, if the engine doesn't rap, the clutch doesn't slip or jump, if it shifts into all gears, it may be alright. Perhaps others can tell you other things to look at. Even if some of these things are not exactly right, parts are plentiful and not overly expensive. The lift does make it very hard to work on though.

Hope this helps some.
