While searching Walt's Tractor Parts found here @ this site I saw where the thermostat went in the Radiator Hose. I'm kinda new to all this but is this where it was originally located or is this a convenience through the marvels of modern technology. I'm getting ready to rebuild the engine and wanted to know if it had a thermostat in a housing (like a car) or what??

Yes, the thermostat lives in the top radiator hose.
You push it in about half way (watch the water flow
direction - the top hose returns to the radiator)
and then put a hose clamp around its middle on the outside. I have had my TO-20 for about 20 years
and have always run a thermostat since I push
snow in the winter. It regulates just fine and
causes no problem bush-hogging in 90 degree weather.

Yup thats where it is. Its an expensive little bugger too, I got mine from Central Tractor. A bit on the primitive side but thats what you got. Before tossing it take it out and see if it looks ok then drop it in a pan of hot water and see if it opens and closes when you remove it smoothly seats well ect. If it is ok keep the old one theyre built like my old caterpillar. Personally I think the hose has more to do with the things leaking by ect and its lots cheaper to change. I put a new temp gauge 9 (generic type) in my TO 20 and it doesn't even really read. It seems to be a lo temp system. So If you get a gauge get one that has graduations very low say 120 deg. It will make you feel better when its wide open as it will be most of the time..... ..... ..
