My MH 44 standard will only run with choke fully closed. I've been thru the carb several times. People tell me it could be timing or head gasket. Has anybody had this experience? If so what did you find? Need your help. Thanks.

Did you clean the carb in a good acid solution
to clean out the ports in the housing that
can`t be reached?

I feel like a dummy. This morning I drained the tank to install the new sediment bowl. I watched the gas drain and it was irratic, I removed the gas cap and it flowed good. I installed the new sediment bowl and drilled a hole the the gas cap, runs great. The idle screw is only open about a 1/4 turn, the only tractor I have that runs with so little adjustment. This tractor was running good until I put it on a trailer and took it to a show. Must be some rust up in the gas cap that I can't see. The trailer trip did stir up the sand in the bottom of the tank as someone suggested. Thanks for your input.

Check the fuel flow from the tank. Run the carb. end into a can and let it free flow for several minutes. My 44 ran exactly as you describe. It would start excellent run great and even have good power for nearly a minute then it would die if I didn't pull the choke clear on. I replaced the sediment bowl with a new one and added about 1 inch to the stem that sticks up into the tank. My tank was clean but I found that a fine layer if silt. (Almost like talcumpowder) covered the bottom of the tank. Couldn't even see it in the sediment bowl but it wouldn't pass through the screen in the assembly. My problem is mostly cured now. Unless I trailer the tractor, then the stuff gets stirred up in the tank and I have the problem again. I have had the tank off and rinsed it out with several types up solvents but it seems stuck everywhere and dissolves when fuel is put back in the tank. I've used the nuts and bolts shaken around in the tank too! Good luck.
Anybody know how to rid my tank of the buildup ?

A permanent solution to the problem of very fine sediment and also rust pinholes is to coat the inside of the tank with a gas tank sealer usually available from antique car supply houses. I have used it for a number of years in old tractor and car gas tanks with very good results. Any fine sediment is trapped and sealed by the solution. Simply remove and drain the tank, clean any loose crud out and let it dry inside. Seal all openings with duct tape (except filler), pour in can of solution, replace cap and slosh tank around to coat inside conpletely. Drain excess back into the can and let the tank dry for 24 hours before reinstalling

Yup, I'd say one of the jets is clogged but you've eliminated that. The only thing else maybe
is to check for air leaks around the intake manifold, but it's probably not that as it has other symptoms. Spray some WD40 around the manifold and see
if you get a sudden increase of speed. Other than that can't figure it.

Have you checked your sediment bowl? Disconnect your fuel line at the carb & make sure you have a good fuel flow.

Thanks for the suggestions. I pulled the carb, went thru it again. Pulled the sediment bowl, cleaned everything thoroughtly. Put it back together, started it and it ran for about a minute and died. The next time I started it I had to keep the choke out and readjust the idle adjust to about a 1/4 turn. I'm doing something wrong, maybe I should look for another carb?

You said that you pulled the sediment bowl. Did you pull the entire unit from the tank? If you didn't pull it and check the stem for spiderwebs. I had an allis that was giving me fits. After all the toil it was meerly an accumulation of spider web in the stem. Runs fine now!

Yes Mike, I drained the tank, removed the sediment bowl fixture from the tank, someone has soldered a stem in the part that fits into the tank. I will replace with a new one although gas runs freely while I am draining the tank. Thanks for the comeback.
