MF50 Governor Weights Stuck

After rebuilding the carburator on my 1958 MF50 the governor did not function. I took the timing gear cover off today to find all of the governor weights stuck in the extended position. I pushed them all toward the center and they all move freely. I was able to push them all back out to the stuck position with very little pressure. I put the governor race back on and with a little push all the weights moved back toward the center and remained free. Could they have gotten stuch because the engine RPMs got to high (2500)? Or is there a problem with the ball diameter, the driver assembly or some other part that should be replaced. Also, is there a way to inspect the cam shaft vent without taking the whole engine apart? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John

I do not know where to get them, but I have heard that the balls can be purchaced from some tractor parts store.

I read your post and I am quite curious about the camshaft vent you speak of.

What is that.

Jim, Thanks for the information about the balls. Since I have them back in place I will put the tractor back together and make some adjustments suggested by other readers.

The vent is a hole behind the first exhaust lobe on the cam that intersects the governor shaft hole in the cam. There is a note in the service manual that says to make sure it is not obstructed because the governor will not work properly if it is. It looks like the vent relieves pressure behind the governor shaft allowing it to move back and forth in the cam shaft. I will try to run pipe cleaner in the end of the cam to see if it is plugged. The parts of the engine that I can see are very clean so I don't think this is a problem in my case. I would be more concerned if I saw alot of sludge around the timing gears or in the oil pan.

The balls which I spoke of, I have come to find out, were purchaced for a Ford "n" tractor. It just so happened that my friends Hercules engine had the same diamater balls as a Ford "n" tractor. Thanks for explaining the vent.
