Robert,

It's easy. Attached is my article on "how to." There are several such articles available but your application is even easier since you don't have a distributor ignition circuit to worry about.

You may look for an alternator from a Japanese import or other small car, because they will be a much smaller alternator (more like the diameter of your generator.) All internally regulated alternators wire pretty much the same. They have two 1/4" spade lug terminals for "sense" and "exciter" and one stud for "regulated output."

You can use it in single wire mode so just make a jumper that connects all three together and then run a 10awg. or 12awg. wire to the plus side of your battery. All you'll need for the jumper is two female 1/4" crimp lugs and one round lug for the output stud. The jumper wire doesn't have to be more than 14awg. or 16awg. but the wire to the battery needs to be heavier.

Many generators were wired for POS ground. You'll need to make sure your tractor is wired NEG ground when you go to an alternator. This won't matter to your starter and you already said you have magneto ignition so that won't matter. Be sure to change any 6v bulbs to 12v and your set to go.

Good luck.
