Another Carb Question

I just rebuilt the carb on my 1958 MF50 because gas was dripping out of the air intake. The kit I got included gaskets and a new shaft for the throttle plate but no jets or needle replacements. I soaked it overnight and blew WD-40 thu all the ports. Now that I have it back on the tractor the throttle is very touchy. A small adjustment caused a large increase in RPM with full throttle taking it over 2500RPM. Also the governor is no longer compensating for the load of a 6ft finish mower in heavy grass. The engine looses about 300 RPM until I get out of the heavy stuff. Any suggestions on what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated.

John

I had a problem with our MH50 overspeeding this summer when I started it up after it had sat for several months. Turned out a wasp nest was behind the carburetor and was blocking the linkage. I know that's not your problem but it was a new one on me.

John.
I have a MF 65 with a marvel schebler carb. I rebuilt the carb after I purchased it.

The kit I used had similiar pieces to the one you are using.

The problem you had with gasoline coming out the intake is caused by a sticking float needle. The carb kit I used had a small retainer clip to fasten to the float and needle. I put it on and had the same problem you are experiencing. I took the carb back apart and took it out and the problem disappeared. The clip was keeping the needle from closing completely therefore letting the gasoline run.

The touchy throttle may be caused by the mixture screws not being set correctly. Are you sure that you hooked the throttle linkage up correctly. You may want to look at a service manual to see that you have thinks set correctly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion Mike. The kit I used did not have the retainer clip on the float needle you refer to but the gas leaking out of the intake has been fixed by the rebuild. I have the owners manual as well as the MF service and parts manuals for the MF50. I set the idle mixture and the main jet screws to the recommended settings and adjusted them until the engine ran smooth. I have also gone through the linkage adjustment procedure in the service manual but this did not help. It is supposed to be in the 70's here tomorrow so I should get a chance to take another look at the linkage set up. Thanks again for your help.

If you changed the throttle shaft is it possible that the lever points in a slightly different direction? It sounds like the rod from the governor may be too long (or short, I don't know the layout on this tractor). Too far in the "go faster" direction anyway.

I checked the new throttle shaft against the old one and they are the same. I spent some time rechecking all the adjustments and they are all correct. The problem seems to be in the governor since the arm is not moving in response to a drop in engine RPM. I'll be taking that apart in the morning. Thanks for your help.
