a couple weeks ago I commented that the special had a longer wheelbase than the straight 44. got all kinds of answers and some saying no difference. well I went out and measured both of my Massey's and it was just as I said. the 44 special - from centre of rear axle to centre of front axle is 95" straight 44- centre of rear to centre of front is 80" so that's 15" longer. also I said the clutch shaft would be longer, which is true. special's is about 7" longer. as I quoted I was comparing these two standard tractors not row crops or the 44-6. everyone started throwing all different models in throwing things way out. here is the clutch shaft from both so you can see the diff.

here s a pic of a 30GR long frame, I have a short frame 30 as well. as far as I know 44 s had long and short frames as well. The rest of the MF235 loader is on it now. Guess what motor is in it.

I cut the inlet off and welded on a 2.5 inch , expanded to fit it over same diameter. muffler is for a MF30B, I like how quiet it runs

This one has a BMC diesel in it. That ovaltone MF muffler makes it almost silent, now to figure out how to make that simms pump quieter.

Final comment. As I tour this and any tractor site we are constantly asked: Can we fit this and
that into this and that. Can we make this work by
modifying or switching. Many yrs of this and that
is why nothing seems to make sense. Switching did
start when I was a young lad and now I am old. So
we can't expect anything to make sense as no one
believes what is in original parts books. Chuck

A few months ago, on one of these forums, someone posted something like 'a mechanic friend told me this tractor was a Ford Model A'. No such tractor right? He posts a picture next day... yep... from the bellhousing forward... it was a rather nice looking Model A Ford....

As stated before THERE IS NO DIFFERNCE between the two tractors. Not sure what you are smoking but it sure does something to your common sense.

OK,I checked 14 tractors today and the only 2 that was shorter was my 30S and 555S,their frames were 62".ALL the other frames were the same lenght 68"(transmission to front).these were 2-44s,2-44-6s,3 triples(333S&444S standards)3-444RCs,1-333RCWF and 1-44Special RCD.The only difference in wheel base was the Triple standard vs Row crop Wide front, which was 12".These were years 1947 to 1957 .My 30 standard frame is drilled so a 30-33-44 or 44-6 motor will bolt right in,same as a 30RC frame. So 11-12 inches is the most I can come up with,a 30 style frame vs 44RC style frame.

This was clarified way back when the first 2 threads were active. If you read everything in those threads, you would see that EARLY standards had a shorter frame, Later standards and rowcrops had the long frame. Comparing the six 44"s at home confirms this for me. However it isn"t a 15 inch difference. Closer to 6". Perhaps your front axles are adding to the wheel base changes? Many different parts will interchange and swap between these models even from the 33 to the 55 if you are creative enough...

If you are referring to the post on March 16,then
look back the original question by DavidG was re
to the difference in length between a 44 and 44sp
and not speaking of standards-that was brought in
later. The standards are diff.p/n. We all know and I believe the original question was not about
standards and that is how I answered as I have the original parts books. Chuck

Missed your last post on this... I rarely open MH threads... so I don't have an opinion... but I do have an 'observation'? It's factory parts alright, unless someone took 2 tractors appart to make one eh? So except for the frames and drive shaft, I suppose everything else is standard off the shelf items for that model?
The flanges holding the battery are completely different aren't they? so either it is factory option or someone made themselves a dream machine.... Being around so so many one of a kind/customized tobacco machines, makes me think- is there wear marks on the bolt holes? like- for an extra big set of mid mount cultivators?

"Everyone has an opinion, even if its wrong".

This could as just as easily apply to the original poster. He has ONE tractor that is 15 inches shorter than ONE other tractor and he claims it is a factory difference! He has been told that factory specifications state otherwise.

I have seen a 44 engine placed into a 30 tub bolted to a 44 rearend, with 44 decals and called a "44 Standard" so someone could get that tractor into the lighter class (with the shorter/lighter tub). How do we know (given the sample of ONE) that he doesn"t have a tractor that someone cobbled together many moons ago.

Also, if you go back and read the first post on this subject, the OP is very vague about what models he is comparing. Is he talking Standards? Is he talking Row Crop? I rarely see Standard 44 tractors, so I naturally think "Row Crop". I can assure you 100% that there is no 15 inch difference in the wheelbase of a row crop "Special" versus a "44" (given the same frontend type).

I also find it very suspicious that he only shows the driveshaft area as "proof" of the wheelbase difference. So why not show a wide shot of the tractors side by side, as we should all be able to discern a 15" difference in wheelbase...?

Always the Skeptic,

Goldsburg

yes as soon as the snow melts around them I will get complete tractor pictures, as these are factory tractors and nothing has been changed as you guys are presuming. as I said I can tell the diff between them from across the yard and you guys are telling me there is no difference in the two models. I saw this difference since being in junior high school. plus I have 3 specials here and they are all identical original tractors. one being owned by my uncle since new, and the other one by a neighbour. ya, being told factory spec's state otherwise ??? maybe somebody cant read the spec's properly??? yep. everyone has an opinion even if its wrong. sure funny how everyone in Canada knows the specials are a longer wheelbase than the straight 44 and down south there they refuse to believe there is a difference. I have never seen a straight 44 being the same wheelbase as the 44 special, so I don't know where your info is coming from.
my pictures will be worth 2 thousand words, so wasting my time even typing this. why don't you's that say they are the same post your picture's also?

When you talk WB,then my 333WF is longer and looks(bigger) longer sitting side by side with my 333 Standard but the frames are the same just the way the front axle is mounted. If all the specials were longer, then why aren't the triples any longer then my 1947 44s.Plus 2 of my triples (standards)came out of Sask..Like my other post said, the 30 frames were drilled so 3 different engines could be put in them,so some 44s could have been built with the short frame. As far as your Canada vs US,Canada was export and there were a lot of different tractors built for export that we never saw or could even buy even tho they were all built in Racine.

So then my 44's and my 44 special, all with the same front casting . Right down to the part number must be all wrong.

1954 44 special, 1953 44, 1951 44, 1950 44 and 1949 44, all the same. Also the same tub as my two 55's, although the 55 tubs are machined differently at the mount pads for the engine.

1947 44 Shorter by about 6". best I can do with a tape measure by myself. Also same tub as my 30.

Cant we all just agree that these things left the factory in all sorts of configurations.

Cant tell you how many times I"ve been told my 1953 with cast wheels and hand clutch is a special. I finally painted the serial number on the engine silver so i could show that it was a H260. original engine, Grampa"s old tractor...
