Well I have been having problems since I bought this tractor and after rebuilding the carb, changing the fuel line and filter, changing the oil and not making a difference I decided to change out the Spark Plugs. I put Champion Spark plugs in it, gapped them at .025 and started up the tractor and started mowing. Well, it was running great and strong for about 2 hours, I thought I had fixed the problem and then it quickly ran out of power.....it was like it was running on just a few cylinders. I took the spark plugs out and it looked like they had been in there for years..... like the other ones.....is there something going on that is burning them up ? I'm about 100% positive that if I put 4 new plugs in it would run for another 2 or so hours strong and then die out. Any ideas ? O'yeah it's a MH50 (gas)

I had this happen to my 65 and it was too rich of a fuel mixture. It turned out the air jets were plugged in the carb.

Years ago used to use AC in our Deere, put new plugs in for tune up, plow for half a day, clean up, plow rest of day, next day put in new plugs, went on for about a week like that, was when tractor supply had there own brand, put in set of their's, never touched for over two years, later went to Champion, worked good for years, changed somthing in manufacturing, were no good, still have that tractor after 41 years, now the parts man, former shop manager for John Deere dealer now recomends Autolite, also sells Champion, AC and others, Always run hotter than recomened, todays fuels require hotter plugs to work

Is the center electrode wearing out in 2 hours? If the sharp corners are wearing off of the center and ground electrodes then the plug is running too hot, or the engine is running too lean which will make the plug run hot. Some other possibilities are that the engine is running too hot or the plug was not tightened enough. The plug should be tightened to 32-38 ft.-lbs. The correct Champion plug for light and moderate use is a D21. For heavy duty use, i.e. continuous heavy duty pto usage then use a UD16 Champion. If the engine has ever been bored out a lot or the head milled exessively then the compression ratio has been raised and you would need a colder plug like a D16 or D14.

i agree completely with the statement"diagnose the problem by using a plug chart", I do however disagree with "go with a hotter plug". The stock plug should do as it is supposed to. If it wont, diagnose the problem dont just work on the symptoms. If the plugs come out with a fluffy black look, its fuel/air ratio problems, if its oily its a rings/valve guides problem, most likely. if the problem only started after you rebuilt the carb, you put it back together wrong. If it didnt run any different before the carb rebuild, its probably a carb problem. If all settings are correct and it still runs rich, youve got an air passage in the carb stopped up. The best way i have found to deal with this is a 1 gal solution of carb cleaner found at any auto parts store, it comes with a dip basket. TOTALLY disassemble the carb and let it soak a couple days. This usually is enuf time to eat out any corrosion/varnish that has dried up in the carb. All this is just an opinion based on what I was able to read here. Hope some of this is helpful

Hi Jason,
I have had a very similar problem with my 8N that I inherited from my dad.
I have about decided that my problem is carb related like one of your replies stated. I haven't solved the problem yet, but I have got it so I can live with it. I let the tractor warm up completely and change or clean plugs as needed. Usually only the back plug is fouled, but sometimes the next one too.
Hope you get your problem fixed, I would be interested to know what you find.

Is it using any oil? If the plugs are fouled,it must be oil burning, or too rich of fuel mix. I have had this in a continental 4 cylinder flathead and would pull the plugs, sandblast them and get the same service as if they were new after a couple more hours, pull them again, same deal. You will most likely need rings or more. I've used a higher heat range plug, but in this case, it was too far gone. You may be more fortunate, worth a try.

It doesnt seem to be burning oil. What kind of plug should I use that will have a higher heat range ? Thanks for the reply

Jets may be too large in the carb and should be downsized a little. This will allow you to open up the air on the carb and possibly avoid smutty plugs.

Thanks,

Most auto manuals like Chiltons or Clymer have a section with pictures of various plug problems are the plugs sooty black or blistered brown of what ever you need to give a better description or take a plug to someone who can diagnose it. If mix is to rich the plugs will be sooty black if to lean will be light shade of brown and almost look blistered. Your float may be to high or leaking and or an air leak at carb or manifold also leaks at carb throttle bushings, to rich of mix at high speed jet on carb or wrong plugs or wires on wrong or bad cap and wires just some things to check. To get a higher plug heat range example is R 44 champion to R 45 or R 46 is to get a higher range the plug number will be higher good luck from a shade tree mechanic regards

I have switched all my tractors to 12 volt and one to electronic ignition. I am having less plug problems now.
