My high school students are preparing to work on a MH 44 Special and it currently will not crank. The battery came to us installed with negative ground, 6 volt. The tractor was rolled to start it I belive. I can't find any definitive reference, but my thinking is that almost all the older 6 volt tractors were positive ground. Anyone have a definitive answer?

ET is right, it should be positive ground. But that's not the problem with it not cranking over. The starter is pretty much insensitive to positive or negative ground and will operate well either way. That's why all the 12 volt alternator conversions work OK, they're all negative ground and all the old tractors were positive ground systems but the 6V starters are heavy duty enough to withstand 12V for starting, as long as it's not too long and sustained. Meanwhile, I'd invest in a nice new set of #1 heavy duty battery cables, not the thinner 12V kind you buy at the auto parts store these days.

Thanks to both of you for the replies. We ended up pull starting the tractor to get it running and into the shop area for pressure washing and inspection. Turns out the battery has a dead cell and all cables are in pretty poor condition. We'll likely end up upgrading both after we get things clean enough to see what's under the years of grease and dirt.
