I am looking at buying a MF255 but have a little concern about the hydraulics. The tractor is in excellent shape other than this question.

The lift seems to work OK but appears much slower than the lift on my 8N? I've seen it lift a 6 foot disk and a 6 foot bush hog but appears to come up slowly. I'm not familiar with this tractor. Should it not be capable of jerking up even a heavier implement?

Could this be indicative of a bad pump or just in need of a filter/fluid change? The tractor has a canister near the PTO lever which I understand is a hydraulics filter I picked up from prior research. Is this in fact the filter and is it the only filter or is there an internal filter also?

The fellow which has the tractor just inherited it from his Father and knows less than I do about tractors.

He had also said he has added some hydraulic fluid to the tractor. Is this tractor sensitive to the type fluid? He could have put in the wrong fluid?

I would greatly appreciate any comments any one has.

Jerry, Big Dean can correct me on this but there is a lever where you check the hydraulic fluid level on the right side that you can adjust to some degree the "speed" at which the lift reacts to a load. Had ours since '76 with NO hydraulic problems. Also answered your plow question below. The 255 has been an excellent tractor for us.

The response lever in the access plate on the right side of the rear housing only controls how fast the lift drops it has no effect on how fast it raises.

Thanks Big Dean, for fixing that ;-) We've always kept ours at about 3/4 of the way over.

The canister filter is for the remote hydraulics. The filter for the three point hydraulics is located inside the rear housing behind the left access plate. The three point will not raise as fast as the 8N. The MF255 cylinder has a lot big diameter than the 8N & the pump GPM is very little more than the 8N. The draft sensing plunger pulling back with a heavy load causes the control valve to only partially open. This will also slow the lift down on them. If I can be of further help email me
