Recently I overhauled a MH with an autolite distributor. It ran good for a while but now I have a problem getting fire to plugs. There was a 12 volt conversion with purchased wiring harness. All directions were followed I used a resistor with a new coil to get the ohms between 2.7-3.3. I also put a new distributor, cap rotor button and plugs in it. I have since bought new copper core wires another new cap, more new plugs, a coil with the correct resistance without the resistor, and replaced the distributor with no luck. The coil wire fires but the spark plug wires won't. The points look okay. Could the condensor be the problem since it was designed for a six volt system? Need help I running out of stuff to replace.

When you turn it over with the cap off, do you get spark at the breaker gap? The gap should be set to .020 I think.

I did a 12V conversion from the diagram on this board. I didn't change any ignition stuff at
all and it works fine. The condenser is the same.
I was scratching my head over the resistor thing as well, so I took a chance and I put a coil in that didn't need a resistor and just turned it over to see what would happen. It worked OK.

Another thing too is at the bottom of the cap
there is a spring loaded contact, is that OK.

Thats all I can think of except maybe going over the coil and ignition circuit with a 12V light tester. Test to ground at various points to see where your getting current but stay away from the high voltage side of the coil.

The old Motors auto repair manuals from the 1950's have basic ignition circuits and troubleshooting guides. Check out the public library.

I was wondering, how did you get a new
distributer as I've been searching all over and
they tell me AutoLite is no longer available.
Can you give me a part number and supplier?

Thanks.

Point gap is .020". I get fire at points when it turns over and from the coil wire. It only stands to reason that the fire dies at the distributor cap. Replaced it and still no fire at points I paid close attention to replace the distributor correctly but I pulled no. 1 plug on compression and rotor is in correct position. I'am thinking the spark is too weak so got some new points, condensor and rotor kit to try. I said new distributor but should have said used and it looks to be in much better shape than the original one. However, take a look at "Marketplace" on Yesterday's Tractors. Go to "Suppliers" and click on "Genesee Products" Look down to the bottom of the list. They list a complete distributor for 4 cly. continental for $169.95. I think these distriburtors were used on a lot of continentals and early jeeps. I don't know if the complete distributor has points or electronic ignition or if it will meet your needs but they should be able to help you out on that. I really liked the conversion kit that they sent.

Gosh, you say you've got your timing right
on #1 cylinder on compression stroke with the rotor pointing to that cylinder. That sounds alright to me.

Can't see what the problem could be, but my
guess is, since you've got the rotor on the right cylinder, that it's something simple since you've
changed everything. Might be a good idea to pay
a mechanic for an hour work and have him drop over to look at it.

Sorry can't think of anything else.

Best of luck and thanks for the tip.

Don't want to get into a "my favorite spark plug is..." discussion but I have had a lot of probs with "Champion" in the past with other engines. My Dad had to drag me kicking & screaming to the store to buy a set when our 81 developed a weak spark that was "unsolvable". I tried every other brand (I think). I even bought splitfire type plugs. In the end, Dad was right, for some bizzare reason, they made the difference... Oh yeah, anybody need some slightly used AC or NGK plugs? Best of luck - ALAN

So what kind did you get ? I'm having problems with my MH50 burning up the plugs..... .they are champion. The tractor runs good for about 2 hours and then just runs out of power. I take the plugs out and they are all burned up.
