Just bought a '51 Pony. The owner mentioned that he was told by the original owner to keep the gas tank cover loose when running it. Sounded a bit strange to me. Has anyone heard anything similar? The tractor runs fine.

Gary: I'm an old retired mechanic and also have a Pony, so I know something about this. The fuel cap should be vented to allow air to enter the tank and replace the fuel as it's used. Be sure you have the correct vented fuel cap. They are available at some parts houses yet. I replaced mine last year. The tank on a Pony is not over the engine and fuel expansion should not be a problem unless the tank is overfilled. When filling the tank the fuel level should be an inch or more from the top. Hope this helps. Ken

The reason why he said this is because some times there becomes a lot of pressure build up. This will not allow good gas flow. Also it might draw the gas upward and come out around the cap letting it leak every where.
