Recently rebuilt my MH 33. It ran good for first month or so. After mowing 10 acre field it started running real rough. I took carb off and cleaned it good, checked the tank for water still ran rough. Pulled coil wire out of coil while running and it skips fire when tractor is missing. Points, condensor, coil, and rotary button all are new. The points don't seem to be burnt. The tractor has a 12 volt conversion from gennesee and the ohms on the coil adjusted to 3.0 as recommended with a resistor. Is there any way to pinpoint the problem?

My MH30 was running rough. Found a very thin
crack under the cap that did not show on the outside. It ran from the center contact to number 4 cylinder contact. These caps seem to be
very thin plastic and are not robust as I changed mine often. Also you might want to check the distributer
shaft play. Just grab it and shake back and forth.
An old timer here who his a bonafide retired MH mechanic says they can be off up to 2 thou and still be OK. If worn more than that the arm tends to smack the contacts rather than slide past. Mine is worn a bit and will cause a miss now and then. You'll have to have a bushing pressed in as I don't think they make AutoLite (later PrestoLite, ford I think) distribs anymore. The only thing else I can think of as your
tractor was working fine and suddenly started to
do the problem is dirty gas and maybe a carb cleaning. Could check your intake manifold gasket
for tightness and leaks, maybe loose bolts after
normal heating as been reached. Spray WD40 around it when running, any leaks will cause sudden acceleration.

Thanks for the response. I have now ruled out plugs, wires, gas, carb. Even though the distributor cap is new and I can't see any cracks in it I plan to change it next. I started the tractor at night and noticed sparks flying from the coil wire inlet on the distributor to various posts. I also noticed that there were sparks at the coil + and - connections. The connections are tight and the coil is new.
