MY MF 165, WITH 212 PERKINGS GAS ENGINE,IS USING LOTS OF OIL. HAVE CHECKED COMPRESSION, IT IS VERY GOOD, AND THE ENGINE HAS HARDLY ANY BLOW BY, WHEN PULLING HEAVY LOAD. IF THE VALVE GUIDES ARE WORN OUT, WILL IT DO ANY GOOD TO REPLACE SEALS, AND CAN THE SEALS BE REPLACED WITHOUT REMOVAL OF THE HEAD. DO AFTERMARKET UMBRELLA SEALS DO ANY GOOD?

Had same problem with MF175 with a perkins. Changed guides(which had to be machined out because of the design),and rings. OE seal replacements are umbrella on MF175. Runs well and hardly uses oil.

JR, I just experienced the same problems with my older Massey. When I checked the compression, it was 135, 140, 140, 145. But in 4 hours use, the tractor used 3 quarts of oil. I pulled the head and had worn guides replaced. My tractor did not use any seals on the valve stems. The machinist I use said really no way that much oil could get past the guides and that the guides and valves were machined to close tolerances. Dropped the oil pan and pulled the pistons. Found that the oil rings were completely flat. You may have the same problem. Hope this helps.

Mike

You may need new valves and guides.
