Hi David,

If you like, you can use an engine oil, 15W-40 the same oil that will be recommended on your engine in the summertime.
My local MF dealer recommends this oil.

Easy to have only one oil to deal with.

Bill, (or any one else)
I have found a local dealer who told me the original oil in the rear end (3 point hitch and trans included) was 90 weight mineral oil. They also said 90 weight lube had addetives that would damage the rear end.
Can any one verify this? Thank you David C.

Original gear oil for Ferguson is gear oil 90 weight. But engine oil 15W-40 has the same weight as the 90 gear oil, or very close. They even recommend the engine oil.

If you want to use 90 weight gear oil you need to be absolutely sure it is NOT an EP or HD oil. EP is Extreme Pressure, and HD is HYPOID oil.

EP and HD additives will damage your rear end.

This is some of the reason I always recommend using engine oil 15W-40 from the same bottle you use on the engine. With engine oil you can't do any mistakes.

15W-40 or 15W-50, doesn't matter.

Hope this helps.

Bill

I have a 1953 TO30 and about 20 years ago i had to change the pto coupler to the standard size(1 3/8) and at that time i changed the oil to an EP 90 weight oil and have not ahad a lick of trouble out of theis unit for the last 20 years.

The manual says: NO EP or HD oil.... never tried the "wrong" oil... so I have no idea what can and won't happen. Just tried to stay out of trouble.
