I have just purchased a 1969 MF165 that used to belong to a good mate of mine who was sadley killed last year, anyway I know for a fact that the hydraulics were working alright a year ago. Since my mate died, the tractor has been stood still. On firing it up the other day, the hydraulics have stopped working. The link arms have stopped working. Any suggestions??

Ed, I had a MF-35 that set up awhile and the lift quit. My problem was the linkage that was not in the oil bath became rusty and didn't move when I moved the lift lever. I had to take off the lift cover under the seat and after I cleaned and oiled everything, it worked fine again. The only part you need is the cover gasket, unles you can save the old one. You may need a friend to help lift the cover. Later. Ernie

Hi, If this tractor has a control valve under the seat the leavers have to be in the right position for the lift to work . Bill

Did you check to make sure that the draft control lever is ALL the way back?

The control valve could be binding, lodged in down position. If a tractor has been parked for a long period of time, it is possible for rust to form on the control valve preventing movement. The valve is part of the pump. If a trace of water is in the hydraulic oil, rust will form and cause the valve to seize.
Remove the response control cover, located on right side of transmission (differential) case to the rear below the hydraulic control levers. Response is written on the cover. Remove that cover and then the 5 (7/16) bolts and one screw (7/16)to gain access to the opening. You will need to drain a couple of gallons of hydraulic oil. After cover is removed, move the contol levers located to the right of the seat and notice movement of vertical lever while moving the control levers. There should be a back and forward movement of the vertical lever that has a round flat adjustment screw that makes contact with a roller. The roller will be to the lower right portion of the opening. Move the roller roller back and forward. You made need to move the hydraulic levers beside the seat so the vertical lever is to the rear of the tractor, away from the roller. Start the tractor, run at low idle, and move the roller. The lift arms should raise and lower with the movement of the roller.
If this is the problem it should free up. If there is water present, you will need to change hydraulic oil. Good luck!!!!!
