MF65 Distributor Clamp

I recently purchased a MF65 with the G176 Continental gasoline engine. My previous owner informed me his previous owner messed with the distributor until it didn't work. So, my previous owner replaced the distributor (Delco-Remy Model: 1112583) and used a clamp that evidently isn't the correct one because now a large amount of oil leaks while it's running . This clamp has three circular nubs on the top side evenly spaced around a large central hole that admits the stem on the distributor. I assume in their correct application the nubs would serve as locating pins and engage three holes drilled in the bottom of the distributor bowl (or some other part) and would clock the distributor and the clamp together. Around the central hole on the bottom of the clamp, irregular radial striations are stamped in the metal. The o-ring groove in the distributor boss on the engine block is recessed such that a circular cross-section o-ring doesn't extend above the top surface of the boss. This would require an o-ring with an oblong cross sectional shape to protrude out of the recess, or a shoulder on the bottom of the clamp that would extend down into the recess to mate with a circular cross-section o-ring, or stack up two o-rings to extend up out of the recess to mate with a flat bottomed clamp. I've had no luck with the latter, it still leaks. I'm sure it's due to the stack of the o-rings and/or leakage through the striations. I don't know what the original parts look like, I checked with the local dealer and his microfiche didn't show enough detail to be of any help.

Can anyone shed some light on the correct configuration for the distributor and clamp? If you are fortunate enough to have a digital camera and could e-mail some pictures to me I would greatly appreciate it.

Ken,
See my reply to your 65 nearby post. Same applies.

Pete,
Thank you for your response. I have two manuals for my tractor. However, little information is given regarding the Continential gas engine, the diesel models on the other hand, are covered in detail. I obtained an exploded view of the distributor from a junk yard but the clamp is insufficently detailed to ascertain the answers to my questions regarding its geometry. Do you have any other ideas how I can get a look at a clamp?

Ken

Ken, Sorry, but it seems that checking out another petrol 65 is the answer to your problem. Do you have the parts manual for the 65 as opposed to the workshop manual? I have the parts book for the U.K. built diesel 65. This contains exploded drawings of each assembly and is invaluable. If you dont have the parts book, perhaps your local MF dealer will let you have a look at his? Unfortunately I cant help you with the petrol engine - they weren't fitted to the U.K. 65's.
Regards,
Pete.

Pete,
Thank you for the suggestion. I would like to pursue a "Parts Manual". Is it an actual Massey Furgeson Corporation publication, or is it a third party publication retailed by the MF dealership? If so, is there a title, publisher, ISBN number?

Ken

Ken, Your local MF dealer should be able to fix you up with a parts manual for your tractor. Virtually all manuals, hand books etc for Coventry built Feguson and MF tractors are available in the U.K. Unfortunately 65 petrol tractors wern't built in the U.K. As I said in my previous post these manuals are invaluable, they give an exploded diagram of each assembly and then list all the part numbers. You can then go to the dealer and say I need part no 1234156M1, and know that you are going to get exactly what you need.
Good luck in your search and if I can be of any help in the future, just e-mail me
Regards,
Pete.

Ken, Just an afterthought, but try e-mailing Big Dean re your distributor problem. You'll find him at [email protected]. Big Dean probably knows more about MF tractors than Massey Ferguson!!! Give him a try, I'm sure he'll be glad to help if he can.
Regards,
Pete,

Pete,
Thank you for your further thoughts. I've already met Big Dean and discussed other issues with him. Actually another bulletin board reader who has a gas MF65 has been kind enough to help me with verbal descriptions. In addition, if need be, can further assist me with a digital pictures. I'm also watching the local Photo Shopper weekly publication for one that's for sale, perhaps I can get a look that way.

As an asside, I have met some very helpful people on this bulletin board like yourself. I read it regularly in hopes I can return the favor to them and others.

Thanks again,
Ken Brading
