What size battery cables are normally found on a TO-35 gas, 6 volt system? The old cables were in bad shape, so I replaced them with #2 cables, which are larger than the old ones. Now nothing happens when I push the starter button. Can you put to large of a cable on? Thanks in advance.

Thanks! I am going to try and jump the starter off directly, bypassing everything else. If the starter doesn't do anything this way I assume it is safe to assume that the starter is bad.

Here is another question. Is there an easy way to tell if it is a 6 volt or a 12 volt system? I have always assumed it was a 6 volt. When I bought it it had a 6 volt battery. I noticed that the 1955 TO 35 gas came as both a 6 volt and a 12 volt system. The replacement parts that I have purchased have always been 6 volt. This tractor has had intermittent electrical problems since I bought it 10 years ago. Thanks for your help!

Steve You may be on to something. (6 vs 12)
If you have lights, check the bulbs & see if they say 6 or 12 on the bulbs. If they are 12v you may have to start all over on your components such as starter etc. Can't remember if you said it had gen or alternator.

If this is not a joke so.

It's only good if you use larger cables(less resistance) but if you use smaller you could burn them down.

You have problably missed a connection somewhere, thats why nothing happens.
Or maybe but i hope you have already checked that. No current in the battery.

Nope this is not a joke. Replaced the cables and nothing happens when I push the starter buttons. It was having problems(slow to start) before replacing cables. It has a brand new battery. Put the old cables back on last night. Still nothing. I even tried jumping it off, no luck. This tractor has had electrical problems. I have had the generator rebuilt, new points, new coil, new condensor, new solinoid, new spark plug wires, new ammeter, new start button and still have electrical problems. I have even replaced the wiring. Wiring is based on diagrams provided in this forum. I am pretty much at a loss on what to do next. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion is to take the starter off the tractor and try to spin it using a battery. If the starter will spin, then you know at least one thing is ok, then work back thru the system from there. Randy

I have a TO-35....
Make sure it's in neutral and if you have a hi/lo range , make sure that's in neutral also. Just pushing the clutch in on mine will not let it start. The way I found out is traced the wiring to a switch on the side of the trans. Also , that switch went bad on mine once too. There is a plunger that comes out (in neutral) and allows the continuity. The plunger had stuck in.

Let us know what made the problem go away.
I have a manual I'll check if neutral or the switch didn't help.
Also , if the switch "appears" to be ok , pull the wires off the switch and twist them together to check for starting.
