I'm having trouble with the hydrolic steering on my MF-231 tractor. Yes I checked the oil in steering box and oil in pump reservoir. I can turn my steering wheel to the right with no problem but when I try to turn steering wheel to the left it take me both hands. I disconnected incoming and outgoing hydro. lines to cylinder on left side of wheel where I'm having all the problem to see if there was fluid going to and from cylinder and yes their was, their is no leakage of hydro. oil out side of cylinder either, also checked for trash in line found no problem. Can someone help before I bring tractor to dealership? I just have a gut feeling it will not be good news. Thanks Louisiana Cajun

I have seen this happen on several MF with this type of steering system.----- You mention the steering box. Between this box and the steering column there should be a control valve. When you turn the steering wheel, the shaft that the steering wheel is connected to must be able to travel freely (up and down) in the steering column. This up and down motion controls the steering valve. If the column happens to get bent, the shaft can move down but not up. This results in hard steering in one direction because the steering valve cannot be activated in one direction. Loosen the 4 bolts that connect the column to the control valve. There may be a bolt in the dash area that you will need to loosen also. Try steering the tractor parked with engine running low RPM. There will be some oil leakage but hopely you can tell if the problem is in that area. Good luck!!!!

Ralph! You are right. I did what you suggested and with those four bolts loose and engine running I turned the steering wheel right the steering shaft did go down freely , but when I tryed to turn steering wheel to left it was hard and steering shaft didn't want to come up. Now! question?? Can I fix this problem myself, or do I need to take tractor to dealership, and will it be expensive for repairs? I think what caused this was me hitting a hole with front left tire wild cutting pasture land. Yes it was a big hole that I didn't see. Thanks: Cajun

It is very simple to replace the column. I have repaired these but they are not expensive. They are easy bent. Most are bent by towing the tractor with the engine not running. The most difficult part about replacing the column is the dash area. You will have to remove the steering wheel. You do not have to remove the entire dash, just disconnect the dash, disconnect any parts that will not allow the dash to be raised and raise the dash high enough to remove column. Good luck!!!!!
