MF 65 Diesel. Water in engine oil. What do I look for first?

My late 60's Massey has water in the crankcase oil all of a sudden. The tractor is used very little. An hour a week for the last few years. Primarily as a shop tractor moving snow and lifting things. Has not been frozen over winter.
Today it started hard as if there could be water in a cylinder. White smoke on start up. Perkins engine. The book says dry sleeves.

I'm guessing a blown head gasket. But that is a guess. I have had no repair experience on these engines. Could anyone tell me a logical way to proceed to tell the source of the problem?

Thanks, Lynn.

I'm not an expert on this but I don't think you should keep the engine running while there is water in the cylinder. That could cause more serious damage. If there is water in the cylinder you'll have to remove the cylinder head anyway to drain the water. You can check and change the head gasket at the same time.

Lynn, these engine can leak water from an electrolisis hole in the parent bore, down the outside of the liner into the sump.
Other than a cracked head which isn't common, that and the head gasket are about the most likely causes.
A couple of things to check are, does the cooling system pressurize while running, does the engine misfire and how far down does the water drain over night or while it isn't running?

My first guess would be a blown head gasket also.
