What kind of oil and where do you put the oil for the live pto on a Massey ferguson 165? How do you check the level? I put in 90W for the gear shifter, but there is no dipstick to check, how would I know if I put in enough? Thanks in advance.

Hi, You need to drain and buy 2 of the 2 1/2 gallons of the correct fluid from your Massie dealer. Bill

As bbott said, you used the wrong oil. Massey has a common reservoir for the tranny, hydraulic, and PTO. Use a HY-Tran type fluid. Any brand will do as long as its meant to be used for combination tranmission/hydraulic system. I used to have a 560 Farmall and they used the same fluid as a Massey.

90W gear oil is not the 'right stuff' for a 165...

There's a special MF-specifed oil that's supposed to go in there.. MF's branding of it is called "PERMATRAN" and it available at MF dealers.

If you can get the mil-spec number from it, you can get the same oil from from a jobber for about 30% less than the MF 'branded' oil at the dealer.

Likely somebody will post it here.

As you've discovered, you fill up by the gearshift levers..

But there IS a dipstick, it's down on the aft section of the starboard side floorboard... back by the 3-point 'response' control... usually has a little 'ring' handle on it so you can pull it out.
