My tractor is a 1976, with the AD4-203 deisel engine. We have recently purchased a farm and have been working the old gal pretty hard. Yesterday, after augering some fence post holes, while returning to the barn at around 1800 rpm, it suddenly started going "Whacka-whacka" real loud and seming to come from right at my feet. I quickly pushed in the clutch and shut down the engine (in that order). The tractor stopped moving as soom as I clutched, but the noise continued until the engine had stopped. Do I have to "crack" the tractor? I thought "no problem, I'll just drop the oil-pan and have a look" but the oil pan seems to be very structural. Can the top of the engine be taken off (head then block) to make this repair? If I have to separate the tractor, should I remove the loader (MF34A) first? Am I expecting too much from this tractor? It seems in reasonable shape (other than the "whacka-whacka) but is definitely high hours. It starts easily, doesn't smoke, and all the bits other than the diff lock work fine. We will be doing some fairly major renovation on about 25 acres of pasture over the next couple of years, starting with brush mowing (about 15-20% broom infested), plowing (JD-1000 2 bottom), disking (MF-68 10 ft. double), rock raking (maybe contractor), and replanting, along with the day to day use for cattle raising.
