I looked at a tractor today that I think is a 101 standard it had JSE 341243 stamped in the top of the transmision. Does anyone know what JSE means the S is for standard but what are the J and E?
also what year?

Is the tractor a 4 or 6 cylinder flathead? If it's a 4 cylinder, then it's a Junior, either a 101 or a 102. You said it's a 101 so it might be a 101 Junior. The J could stand for Junior but I've got 2 of them and the J does not appear in the serial number. As for the E, now that's a strange one. Are you 100% positive that it's an E ??? If it is a standard (wide) front tractor, then the letter part of the serial number should end in S for standard. Meanwhile, if it's a 6 cylinder, it could be a 101 Super (with a Chrysler flathead engine) or a 101 Senior (with a Continental flathead engine). What is the number portion of the serial number?

The engine is gone. I stoped to look because I thought it might be a 201. It is a standard model.

Looked under all the s/n for all the 101 jr/sn/spr... that 6 digit # doesn't fit any of them. If you're sitting on the tractor, was that # on the top cntr of the actual tranny or was or was it somewhere else? They had a lot of casting #'s which people smarter than I may be able to descipher, but the best way is the s/n. It should be just 6 #'s on the old 101's. I don't think they had the code letters (30gr etc ) until around 1946. (I have a '46 81 w/out the letters, Dad's '47 MH20 does) Dad's Seniors have an "RE" or a "SE" AFTER the #. Hope this helps - ALAN

PS were the side panels there? Were they louvered or open curved?

The number was stamped into the top left side of the transmission where they usuall are. The tag on the frame had the same number. That was all you could read on it. The tag was oval. The grill was the same as an 81. Cast frame like a 101. There was a removable panel on each side under the gas tank like 101's had, the ones that are usually missing.

Talked to Dad last night, when I asked him, his response was "E was electric start and the J was something to do with the brakes" The more I quizzed him about the J, the less sure he was but the E he seemed pretty sure of. Another club member said the same about the E, but the J was a reference to "Junior". I tried, I really did, but nothing concrete. If Dad finds his reference book that he looked for and couldn't find (with these letters) I'll let you know. good luck - ALAN
