Hi all, I recently purchased a MF 40B Industrial Loader tractor and the tractor is great except for one small problem, at least I hope it's small. The Steering is Hydrostatic, and it seems to get stuck going one direction or the other at times. When this happens most of the time if you turn more toward the direction it is already turning, then back the other direction it will start to turn slowly. Then at other times it will steer both directions with no problems. What is wrong and how do I fix????? Help!!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Leo

Sounds like the centering springs. They sometimes crack and are easy to replace. The springs are shown in the I&T Shop Service Manuals. I have a MF245 Orchard Tractor which has the same hydrostatic steering system. Most of these hydrostatic steering system are built by Char-Lynn. I worked as a Cat mechanic for a Caterpillar dealership and Cat used the same steering metering system in their 920, 930, and 950B rubber tired loaders. Massey will only offer some of these parts as a complete unit, but Cat offers each part seperate. If you need a complete description of how this hand metering pump works, Cat service manuals for the rubber tire loaders mention will give you the complete details. Some of the manuals on the market show the disassemble and assemble but are lacking details for trouble shooting. These systems are very easy to trouble shoot and to repair. Good luck!!!

Ralph,

This is very helpful information! Do you by chance remember which of the service manuals give trouble shooting information? The MF40 factory manual helps very little. My tractor also suffers from poor hydrostatic steering boost in one steering direction when it is warmed up well in the field. Is almost spooky on the hilly teraine where I live.

Thanks very much,

Harve

Service manuals for Cat rubber tired loaders,(920,930, 950B,and late 966C,) have a very good guide for the hydrostatic steering system. Cat calls the section of the steering system where the steering wheel is mounted a hand metering unit. Massey Ferguson calls the section a hand pump. Cat sends the metered oil to a larger valve which sends large volumes of hydraulic oil to large steering cylinders. Massey Feerguson sends oil directly to the steering cylinders. You might contact some local contractors in the area where you are located and they might have a service manual. Cat has a section in there manual --- systems operations, testing and adjusting for hydrostatic steering that can be good training material. This information can be used on any type of hydrostatic steering. Cat has the same information in their rubber tired backhoe (400 series)that will work on troubleshooting Massey Ferguson systems.
You mention a problem in steering in one direction. Could be a centering spring but more likely a steering cylinder. When steering, oil is directly to both cylinders and enters on the piston end on one cylinder, enters on the rod end on the other. If the seals have failed on the piston of one cylinder, it will affect the steering in one direction. If you have a problem steering to the right, usually a problem in left cylinder. The same holds true for the opposite direction. You might want to keep this in mind. Good Luck!!!!!

I got a reply from Big Dean and he sait it appeared to be the steering cylinder seals, I guess pretty cheap and easy to get seals, about a 10th the cost of new cylinders, he did say once the seals are replaced they won't last as long as new cylinders, but for the cost and amount that I use the tractor, I'm going to go the seal route as soon as i have time.
