Im looking at buying a '50 TO-20 that is for sale locally. The guy who has the tractor says that the lift only works when the transmission is in neutral. Is this true? is something broken in the lift? The guy who has the tractor is not very knowledgable about tractors and neither am I, so please help/ advise.....Thanks

The other answers posted answer your question.
Just a little extra input from me. The Fergusons
have 3 point hitches with only "draft control" as
opposed to the 8N Fords. They work great with plows
but with bush hogs or rear blades, you need check
chains to set the height since the draft control
works almost the opposite of what you want with those
implements. Also, either tractor from that era needs
and overruning clutch on the pto since when it is
engaged, it is connected to the rear axle and the
inertia from a bush hog blade will push you around
when you push in the clutch to stop. Good luck.

The pto turns whenever the clutch is up - in gear or in neutral. Press down the clutch and it stops. Sometimes a good situation - sometimes not so good.

the piece of info missing is to say that the hydraulic lift pump, is attached to the pto shaft. whenever the pto is engaged and the clutch is up (engaged) wether in gear or not the lift will work. only tractors with "live" pto or engine powered hydraulics will work whenever the engine is running.
