New diesel owner/operator with questions about circa 1974 MF 275

I acquired an MF 275 diesel. It is a step up from my former Case 530 gas tractor. Nothing seems the same.

1. Using the MF to bushhog for the first time yesterday, I noticed a tendency for the 3-point hitch to sluggishly respond when demanded to raise the 5' wide implement. Is this due to insufficient hydraulic fluid? a partially plugged filter? other? A 70 HP diesel tractor shouldn't even shrug at what the 40 HP gas tractor lifted in routine operation.

2. With the MF throttle set in low, 3rd gear, at 1500 rpm, the tractor would "bog down" while the implement was cuttng in the way-too-thick grass and nearly stalled on multiple occasions. Is this "typical" for a diesel (I can appreciate too much work for not enough power)? The gas engine peddle would have been depressed for more output power under heavy load. Is there a way, on a diesel, to actively "jack-up" the rpm's under increasing load (there is no "gas" pedal)?

3. On the gas tractor, regardless of gear, increasing the engine speed increased the PTO rpms. On the MF, at all gears (tried to date) and engine speeds, there appears to be a constant PTO rpm. Is this correct?

4. I am not accustomed to the MF clutch. It does not engage until the final 1/3 of travel of the pedal and then seemingly all at once. Should this be adjusted to "loosten" the point of engagement or am I just being tenative with equipment that is new to me?

Question 1. Be sure to operate on position control. Problem with the Ferguson pump ? Normally the external filter is connected to the auxilliary pump, not the scotch-yoke or Ferguson pump

Question 2. Work at 1700 rpm.

Question 3. Something is wrong. Is pto clutch slipping. Do you have a 8 or 12 speed multi-power(MP) ? By the way, if you have a MP, make sure to switch to High MP frequently to better lubricate the trans.

Question 4. Not normal ; adjust the height of the clutch pedal ; if impossible, you have problem.

I own a MF 275 MP and it is a very good tractor. The 275 is very powerfull, 60 HP drawbar and 67 HP pto, 248 CID engine.

Have a mechanic examine your tractor or do it yourself. Look for I & T manuals or Jensen.
