I've had this MF35 with the Z134 engine for nearly three years, it has always ran great, but sunday while brush hogging the engine started to surge. When the tractor would bogg down a little the engine RPM would drastically increase. (almost a thousand RPM's). Then the RPM's would see-saw back and forth from low to high for about 10 to 15 seconds before settling back to normal. All the linkage seems in place and connected correctly. The only recent maintenence is an oil change. Anybody have any ideas, I would appreciate it before I tear into the carb.

Thanks Steve Clark

Steve: I'm not familiar with the MF35, but worked as a mechanic for 50 years. Some things to check are: fuel quality (no water or dirt), plugged main jet in carb, loose or damged linkage from carb to governor, mixture too lean. Most older carbs have a drain plug or screw. Try draining a little fuel then with engine running at a medium to fast speed, open the main mixture screw until the engine runs rich. This will sometimes allow dirt to suck on through without disassembling the carb. After doing this you will have to re-adjust the mixture. The correct setting will be somewhere between too rich and too lean. Experiment a little. Good Luck, Ken
