Hi Team,
I've reached a crossroads with my FE-35 and am after your collective advice. It has the 23C 4cyl Diesel engine and as usual it is quite difficult to start and requires ether for every 'first time of the day' start. I've heard that this long term ether use will damage my engine which is another concern. I also have to have the battery on the charger for a day before I use it to start the machine which means I can never do any tractor work on the spur of the moment. I am finding this frustrating and I am thinking of moving to (and have just looked at) a petrol MF-35 which seems to be the same tractor only easier to start (and its the same price as my diesel was, which I could still sell). Any advice on Pro's and Con's would be appreciated.
Thanks and regards.

I have a MF35 with the 23C Standard diesel engine. It was a very poor starter and consummed gallons of oil. After a resleeve, regrind and new valves combined with fitting a diesel fed glow plug in the inlet manifold in place of the Ky gas pump injector cold start system, the cold starting is much improved and it will now start on frosty mornings which was a definite nono before. It would be my opinion that you would better to put your efforts into sorting what you have as the 23C will run "for ever" compared with a petrol and it sounds great as well.

If you equip your 23C with preheaters (glowplugs), then keep it, 'coz the petrol '35 drinks petrol like a hole in the ground.
The 23C is a fine engine once you get rid of the starting probs. There has been several types of glowplugs available, to which the cyl head can be adapted (i.e. holes with appropriate seats drilled in the precombustion chambers)
The ultimate solution is a three cyl Perkins '35 of course. Starts immediately even at temps below freezing pt., very light on the fuel budget, and can be obtained with multipower, diff. lock and all other gadgets to be found on a "modern" tractor.

Good luck Thyge

The Perkins is the engine to have but ya got a 23c and you can make it a fine machine. The heater in the intake should make it MUCH easier to start also can install a radiator heater. Don't own a gasser but i don't think it would have the pull of the deisel plus like the man before me said gassers just don't sound like a real tractor.
