Just bought a 1967 MF150 diesel. Was so excited I bought a very heavy 6' Woods brush hog. Can't even lift it off the trailer with a boom. Lifts my 5' Sidewinder hooked to 3 point just fine. So, I put the boom on my 8N and picked it right up (although it did stand the tractor on end). Changed fluid immediately after I bought it. Book called for 8 gallons but only took 7 to fill it (according to dipstick). Starting to freak out...haven't even gotten to use tractor yet and it seems to already have a hydraulic problem! Please help with any suggestions.

Removed lift cover and adjusted stopper bolt for control spring. Also removed hyd. filter that was 80% blocked with gunk and cleaned it. Put it back together and it lifts the brush hog like nothing is even attached. Thanks for all your input!

Takes a good hydraulic system to lift heavy loads with a boom. Check the amount of play in the master spring, where top link connects on 3 point hitch. If there is too much play (travel) the system is getting a false signal that there is a heavy (too heavy) load. Remove travel by adjusting master spring. If no problem there, you will need a pressure gauge that will read 3,000 PSI or more. Need to remove plug on right side of hydraulic cover, (above respone control lever, a few inches towards front of tractor, plug has 3/8" pipe threads) and install gauge. Hook up the boom and lift something, Woods bushog, and notice reading on gauge. Should be around 1000 to 2000 PSI depending on the length of the boom and the weight of the bushog. Remove the weight from the boom and also remove the boom from the tractor. While the tractor is running about 1500 RPM, move both levers on the 3 point hitch control to the rear, one should be in Constanting Pumping and notice pressure reading. Should be about 2500 PSI,(2200 to 2700 would be ok). This will give you the MAXIMUM pressure that your system can obtain. If the reading is between 2200 to 2700, that would likely be the setting for your relief valve. If you cannot obtain these readings, remove the response cover from the right side, below where the gauge was install. You need to drain the oil level down a couple of gallons. Start the tractor, move the levers to the rear, be sure one is in Constanting Pump, and noticed the activity inside the case. Oil will be spraying around inside. You should see oil spraying from the relief valve if the system was working correctly. If oil is spraying from the valve and readings is low, you are in luck, bad valve. If oil leaking from cylinder, failure there. If oil is spraying around pump area to front of tractor, failure in that area. There could be a problem in the control linkage, so move the contol valve lever inside the case and notice readings. Massey's are easy to repair, the best thing is that allow you to see through this opening what is going on. Good Luck!

What sort of fluid did you use?
Check the type with the oil manufacturer and select the recommended one. Clean the hydraulic filter and replace fluid again. - Expensive but cheaper than a mechanic.

Check the oil type - I filled my Mf135 with Rimula d 40W 5 years ago and was a bit worried it was to low a viscosity. Checked the Shell Aust site and they now recommend Agroma MP. This is a 15W - 40W oil so the Rimula D 40 W was probably recommended at the time. This is alot lower than 90 SAE that some poeple have mentioned using.
