I am looking real hard at a MF 165 gas(1969). It has 10 hours on a totally(i mean totally) rebuilt engine(still has the break in oil in it). THe tractor has new paint, decals, and the Tires still have the nubs on the tread(Less than 6 hours on the tires). The tractor has been completely apart and back together by the best tractor mechanic in southern ohio, all seals and bearings/bushings were replaced, carb rebuilt new muffler, plugs wires an much more. The tractor comes with a Massey Front endloader that has been reworked and repainted(the single ram with a double cyl pump), and a brand new bucket that has never seen the dirt yet. The engine is clean enough to eat off of and the tractor has no rust whatsoever. The guy wants 7200 for the tractor, but he won't sell the tractor without implements. He has a brand new brush hog (6ft.) a scraper blade, a new set of potatoe plows, a newer set of discs, and regular plow, and a 55 gallon drum of hydraulic oil. He wants 1000 for the implements(which brings the grand total to 8300, and he said he would take 8250), and says he paid 1200 just for the bush hog, and the discs & blade. I cannot make my mind up, some people have said it would be like buying a new tractor, so the price was cheap, other have said no matter which way you cut it the tractor is 30 years old. What advice would you offer a young man on this decision. I plan to hold on to the tractor as long as we have our farm which will probably be more than 20 years. Thanks.

It must have been really abused to need all
that stuff. You can find 165's around on farm sales with under 3000 hours for around 5000.00
to 6000 with loaders.

The tractor was pet project for the mechanic I told you about, he was doing it for himself, and after he was through with it, he decided to sell it instead because he had a JD the same size, and could rationalize having two around the same size. It A few years to convinced him to part with it. As an update I bought the tractor for 8000 with everything.

See my post below on dealer prices. A new 240 massey (close to your 165 in size) with 4 wheel drive and loader is $24,000. You are getting a functionally equivalent machine and several implements for a third of that. If you are as confident of the re-build as you sound BYE IT.

Go for it. Think about it as machinery and what it is capable of doing for you. Then compare it to the equivalent machinery new. Sounds like a great buy to me. Good luck on your decision. Dave

Rob- I wish this tractor was close to me. The price is cheap for all the goodies you get and since the tractor was rebuilt, the components are no longer 30 years old.
New tractors with the HP of a 165 cost several thousands more than this, and amortizing the cost over 20 years will make it even more attractive.
I think its a good idea to get the opinion of people from a board like this. There are always good ideas to think about coming from a large cross-section of tractor owners.

This sounds like a great deal to me as well! I paid $5K for a mf 135 diesel with 1900hrs. with no implements.I've had it for two years, since we bought a small farm, and wondered like you if I had done the right thing.Trust me you won't regret it ,if it is as good as you described!
