I have a '48 TE20 which has set up for 25 years. The shop wants $155.00 to fix the starter. All the guts need replacing. Will an 8N starter replace it? Anyone with an extra starter laying around (haha)?
Give me some (cheap) ideas please,
Mike

I have a 48 TE 20 myself. I had my starter done for $60. Must not have been in bad shape. There is an alternative for you. The TO 20 had a Delco starter that is interchangeable. I don't have the part number right now but I can get it for you if you'd like. I'll look for a follow-up.

Hello

TE 20 starters may be around, depend on which engine you have. Price $194 I think brand new. Parts also available, bushings, brushes, and bendix.
This is in Norway, I also think you can find this in England at the 20 parts company, but don't expect them to be cheaper.
Unfortunately I have prices for the parts, but they can't cost much.

Are you able to fix it yourself if you had the parts, unless the field and rotor is damaged ?

Pleas let us know.

Hey, this is Mike again. Thanks for the replies. I thought about rebuilding the starter myself, but the machine shop said the insulation in the field coils will quickly break down during use. And the rotor or something needs rewiring. This is a reputable shop and I guess they are being truthful. I will look into getting the Delco starter. If you don't mind, Tad, please send me the number. If that doesn't work, I'll just pay the bill. I want a reliable tractor when I'm done, not a patch job. In 40 years, that extra money won't matter much, but 40 minutes time now might save it!
Thanks,
Mike
