Hi I am in the UK & have a 1963 MF35X with a thermostart/glowplug which appears to get hot when 12VDC is applied via a battery charger, but when I operate the ignition key switch only 6 or 7 VDC is applied to the plug and this decreases after a few seconds. Does anyone know if the ignition switch has a resistor to drop the voltage to the thermostart/glowplug or is my ignition switch faulty??? this is what I suspect

Thanks to anyone who reads this and if you have them please send me photos of your tractors

Hello.

There is no resistor in the switch.

Suspect a poor connection on the switch first - both the screw and press-on terminals can corrode and develop increased resistance over time.

Second possibility - voltage loss on the wire feeding the start switch.

A quick check - see if one of the switch terminals heats up when you activate the thermostart. Cleaning (and some corrosion-resisting electrical compound like Penetrox) will cure this.

If the switch itself is defective internally (check for voltage input, and drop across the two connections involved - both under load), they're about $30 Cdn, here - 15 pounds UK? - find a Vapormatic (Exeter, 0392 435461) dealer near you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your responses, I'm going to try replacing the switch first as I have checked out all of the other bits and pieces. With luck this should resolve the problem I will keep you posted.....Regards Malc in the UK
