Can one replace the four cylinder petrol engine of my '59 MF35 with the 3 cylinder Perkins found in later model tractors? What would be the problems to look out for?

I could obtain the engine from a C144 crawler at a good price. Is the engine of this crawler the same 3 cyl perkins found in the 135/240 - what are the differences if any? As far as I can see it is similar except for the shape of the sump.

Hello Laurence -

Check the engine serial number on the C144 engine. (I don't know that tractor model.)

It should be found on the right side of the block, just ahead of the fuel pump. "152 UA" will identify it as the same as the 135 engine - Perkins AD3 152 direct injection.

Now the fun begins....

If the clutch in your 35 is the same as the C144 (dual - dual, or single stage-single stage) and assuming the C144 has the same transmission case as the 35/135, the two engines should bolt up. If they are different clutches, a new clutch would be needed.

The front axle mounts may be different (parts books show different casting numbers), and probably fuel tank. We looked at changing our 4 cyl Standard to the A3 Perkins (earlier than the AD3), but shelved the project. Fuel tank clearance over the engine, hood, etc.

Fuel plumbing will be different, but a minor problem. Our AD3's eliminate the intake manifold preheat system. (Your 4 cyl may have glow plugs rather than this system.)

You might consider looking for a junked 135 for the front end, tank, tin and plumbing.

It's a good thought - the Perkins is easier on fuel, more powerful, easier starting, and considerably cheaper to overhaul.

Good luck. Hollar if you have more questions.

Question for you - your e-mail address shows "za" as an identifier - what country are you in?
