How do I get my steering wheel off my MF35? I want to replace it because it's all cracked and my wife bought me a new one. I have taken the nut off, soaked the shaft with penetrating oil, but it won't budge, even with a puller. I don't want to ruin the steering shaft. Thanks for the advice in advance.

The bearing puller and penetrating oil did the trick. Thanks, all.

I'd be tempted to slit the steering wheel hub down the side with a hacksaw or grinder - not very elegant, but it works with rusty pipe fittings provided you are not sentimental by the item being rendered completely useless.

Just a thought
Laurence

i have a massey 50, the way i had to remove my steer wheel was, soak just like you did, but, when usin the puller, ,matco 2 ton gear puller, after i had a good amount of pressure on the shaft from tightening the puller i used a brass hammer and struck the shaftt of the puller fairly hard, this took place about 3 or 4 times but the wheel popped right off fairly quickly

If you know someone with a brake pin puller for S-CAM brakes this will also work to pull this type steering wheel.

Randy:

I did pretty much the same thing as Randy did, when I took the steering wheel off my MF35. I kept it under tension (used a Sears pulley puller and nylon rifle sling). She finally POP'd off. Do yourself a favor when you put the new one on, put a coat of anti-seize on the steering wheel shaft and wheel itself. Makes it a much easier to take it back off in the future.

Randy i had the same problem with my mf-50 using my home made puller lt looked like it was never going to let go. So i walked away in "digust" leaving it under tension. Two beers later i came back for another go and found the puller on the ground and steering wheel loose.
Try it you never know your luck or at the very least you might enjoy a cold beer!

Good luck Marty.

I've found that the conventional three legged puller wont work in this situation. I recently had to remove the steering wheel from a tractor where the wheel was siezed solid. I found after trying just about everything that a bearing puller did the trick. You should be able to hire one from your local tool hire shop, but even if you have to buy one they're a good investment.
Hope this helps,
Pete.

After all these years of car and tractor restoration I have found my trusty torch to be my best friend. A little bit of heat goes a long way. I have yet to find a nut or bolt that won't give up to the pressure of heat. I have used the acetaline torch for many a stuck bolt and always have had success. Hope this helps....
