We have an MF 135 Gas tractor (1976) that seems
to be having hydraulic problems. What its
doing is shaking the three point hitch when you
try to raise it slowly. It does go up but it shakes
noticably. It has a loaded install, and it shakes
only sometimes when you raise it slowly.. Now
it only does this when you raise it slowly.

Anyone with any ideas as to what could be causing
this to happen..and how to go about fixing it.
(Detailed desciption if possible)

thanks

P.S when it shakes it makes a slight knocking
noise somewhere in the clutch area when lifting a heavy load on the three point hitch.

Thanks again

Change your relief valve on hydraulic pump. This can be done through the side cover with a short 3/4" wrench.

I think this can also happen when the synchronizing screw that couples the controls to the pump has vibrated in. I need to do the same for my 135. At last several years ago, correcting the synchronization cured the jumpy lifting.

Sorry if I misunderstand theproblem, but my MF 35 shop manual says this: ( MF 135 has more or less the same pump. )

Jerky or uneven lift when the operational lever is raised
Possible cause:
One or more inoperative side chamber valves.
Attention Required:
Remove pump and exaine outlet valve seats and check for dirt or forreign material.

My own comments: If this is the cause of your problem there is valve kits available for your pump, gasket set, and also a complete overhaul kit, gives you new pistons, chambers, +++

But setting the synchronization screw fixed mine last time and that's about 23,727 times easier than pulling the pump!!!

Sure, I only refered to what my manual says about the problem on a MF 35....

Only thing I wonder about is what page did you find that 23,727 figure. Have been looking all afternoon for it, and will probably have no sleep until I find it..... ...
Maybe I'll send a fax over to Massey Ferguson in Coventry and ask them. Must be a tricky calculation!!!

But if you notice (at least in the I&T manual) the first step for most any hydraulic problem is to check the synchronization adjustment, the screw I've mentioned repeatedly. Then to do other trouble shooting tests if that doesn't correct the problem. Your manual should say that too, so you don't replace an inaccessible $700 pump when all it needs is turning a screw that has vibrated out of position. I've already done that (adjusted the screw) in the last 8 or 9 years, and just 100 hours before I bought the tractor, the pump was replaced (though with a used one). Last I checked system pressure (before some louse stole my gauge) I had rated pressure from the pump.

It's clear to me that after 30 years of wear and vibration the original locking technique for that screw is inadequate, just like the oiling of the Continental engine's rocker arm shaft.

Now that a near winter blast has arrived, its time to heat up the 135's transmission oil with a few miles of road running and then dig in and adjust that screw so I can get ready to sell the tractor.

Adjusting the screw I can do. Splitting the tractor I have to hire done for $500 or more, plus the cost of pump repairs or replacement.
