My son-in-law has purchased a Massey30 and it is sitting in a barn. The engine is siezed but that's standard mechanical stuff, it is the one rear wheel that will not turn and we can't budge the tractor...I suspect that a brake is rusted on. Is there another explanation for this siezed wheel? If it is the brake does the rear wheel have to come off in order to get at the drum and lining? Thanks for any help..now if it was a Farmall I'd know what to do...Thanks from a traveller in Massey Land

Michael Soldan,
Well, at least you're color consistant if not brand
consistant. A step in the right direction, I'm sure.
I'm e-mailing you 3 pics from my 44 book. I don't
own a scanner and a digital camera is not the way
to do this. Let me know if they don't come out
right and I'll photo copy it & send them out.
On Massey's, (correct me if I'm wrong guys) 30's
and up all have a similar braking system. 22, 20,
81 & etc. have disc(s) in the axel housing. If
you have trouble getting them relined, there's a
guy up here that has done several for dad.

Good luck - ALAN

Mike,
After talking to Dad, he said it's probably bands
around the drum instead of shoes inside. (MORE
LIKE THE 101 THAN THE 44) We don't have a manual
on the 30 yet but I think the basic concept is the
same. Oh, yeah. Dad also wanted me to stress to
you to change the seals even if they don't leak.
He's been burned twice and for $12 a side "it's
cheap insurance" against the old one going bad
because of new usage. Good luck - ALAN

Hello Mike, fancy meeting you here. I think those 30's have the same brake system as on my 101 Juniors, just take that side cover plate off the brake assembly on the side of the transmission case and there is a band/drum setup inside. The band expands outwards if I remember correctly and contacts the inside of the drum. It was the same as the brakes on the 44's as well as all 101/102 Junior and Senior models. Good luck and hope it's that simple. I've done both of my Juniors with the wheels still on. You will probably have to take off the floorboards to really get in there, and also all the linkages, shafts, and pedals too I believe. Did I ever send you any of this Massey stuff I've got here? Let me know by regular email.
