This 1969 165 has served me well since I bought it at an auction a few years ago. Recently, the PTO has begun to slip when mowing heavy grass or when using the post-hole digger. I have no repair experience and I do not have a manual for this tractor. I don't even know how to change out the hydraulic fluid. The dip-stick shows full and the fluid doesn't appear foamy. I would appreciate any advise as well as guidance on where I might purchase an owners manual. George

If PTO works semi when cold, then not when hot...Your pump is defective. Split tractor, rebuild pump, replace clutch/pack... PTO and M/P will be like new.

Try info at www.bareco.com.au for a parts list, pictures and info. They have some hints re clutches ie don't mix parts etc.

Lee, Thank you for responding. I have ordered both an operators manual and a repair manual from the tractor manual section. It listed the manual for a 165 G & D model and I hope it's the correct one since it was expensive. I don't know whether my PTO is independent or not. The lever is located by my left foot on the side of the transmission housing. This tractor has a hi-lo range lever on the dash. It ceased working last year. When it did work I could set the hi range to gear down my speed when going down hill. Nowdays it acts like it's in neutral while going down hill. there seems to be no connection to the transmission until the tractor slows down to a speed that requires acceleration on the part of the engine. I can't help but believe that all these "clutch" related problems may be caused by the same thing. -George

Freewheeling downhill simply means your multi-power is in low range. High range activates the engine braking and 'hill holder' feature(s).

The multi-power problem is independent of anything going on with your PTO... except perhaps for the general indication that it's time for a clutch and tranny overhaul.

Before you start either of these projects get a repair manual.

I had to fix my PTO last fall on my MF-165. It doesn't sound like you have the same problem I had. It depends on if you have the independent PTO or the engine driven one. If you have a two stage clutch(engine/ground lever), you have the engine driven varity. You will have to split the tractor at the bell housing and replace the PTO clutch disc and maybe the pressure plate. If you have the Independent PTO(on/offlever), you will have to split the tractor behind the transmission, remove the hydraulic pumps, remove the PTO shaft to get at the clutch pack.

I have the Independent PTO. My problem was it just quite, turned out the clutch hub blow off the snap ring groove on the back of the hub that holds the clutch disc. Used hub, new clutch pack, and 'O' rings cost me $700 plus labor.
