MF35 with 'rigged' top cover

I just bought a '62 MF35 Perkins Diesel with a 4ft mower and a disk for $2000. The 2 main problems are the shift linkage is loose and the top link has been welded solid. I can live with the linkage (pressing down instead of lifting up to shift) but I might have problems with the top link. The rocker link is welded solid to the lift cover arm, and the clevis is welded to the retainer nut. Other than being a few bricks shy of a load, why would someone do this other than a 'quick' repair of a broken control spring or plunger? Could this have anything to do with the lift going up but being dificult to lower at times? Are there any good sources for these parts if I can't unweld them?

In spite of these problems, it seems to be a strong running tractor - a huge step up from my 8N.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Try www.bareco.com.au to get a list of parts you need. I don't know who in the UK carries these parts but it should give you a start.
