MF65 Engine Noise

I just purchased a MF65 with a gasoline engine. It was operated for an undetermined period with a cracked head and some portion of that time with water in the oil. With a new head in place and no water in the oil, it makes a knocking type of engine noise. It almost sounds like a diesel when you turn the ignition key off as it comes to rest. If it were an automobile, I would say the bearings were damaged. However in a tractor I'm not so sure. Yes, it's entirely possible that the valves arn't adjusted properly but once again in automobiles they wouldn't make a knocking sound, they would be a ticking sound.

Does the MF65 gas engine normally sound like this?
If not, is it possible to drop the oil pan and replace just the rod bearings as opposed to pulling the entire engine?

Ken

IF YOU RUN THIS ENGINE FR A WHILE WITH A CRACKED HEAD CHANCES ARE YOU MAY NEED NEW ROD AND MAIN BEARINGS.CHECK CRANKSHAFT JOURNAL DIAMETERS ALSO A LOT OF TIMES IF HEAD WAS CRACKED ON ONLY ONE CYLINDER,THE COOLANT WILL WASH THE LUBRICATING OIL OFF PISTON AND WRIST PIN CAUSING EXTREME WEAR IN THIS AREA,REMOVE PLUG WIRES ONE AT A TIME TO ISOLATE KNOCK NOISE.GOOD LUCK.
