I have a bent axle MF135 with a two stage clutch.
When I bought this machine 5 years ago the 2nd stage of the clutch would not release. Ie I could not engage pto or hydraulics without crunching gears big time. Got a mechanic to free it. After 5 years it has happened again. How do I release it. ie remove lower cover plate and use a screwdriver to prise it apart or what?

Hello Smokey -

There's an adjustment inside which ususally fixes that grinding. (Not always, though - check the thread a week or so ago on the same subject.)

There are three 5/16 cap screws with lock nuts around the perimeter of the clutch disk between the springs, heads pointed back. Some clearance between the heads and the plate further back. Thesse adjust the point where the PTO clutch starts to release (extra pressure on the pedal about half way down).

Clutch wear opens this clearance up, and pedal won't completely release the clutch in the full down position.

Books say .080 -.090 clearance. We've found this doesn't always work, and use .055 - .065.

Screws and lock nuts are usually set hard. Use a GOOD wrench, and loosen carefully. If you round the corners, you'll have to split the tractor to finish the job.

Good luck!

Jack
