Buying a MF65

Have a friend looking at a MF65, believe to be a '59 or '60.

We looked through the archives a little, and still have a couple questions.

Is it about 50 hp?

This tractor has a loader, full hyd., w/down pressure. How sturdy are the front end components when equipted with loaders.

Also saw some postings about the power steering being unreliable? Can someone expand on this topic?

How common are 3pt hitch problems. Seller said it stopped working, was fixed by dealer, month later it stopped working again. Dealer said it was a o ring in the 3pt cyl., but owner never used the 3pt, so didn't worry about it. . .is this common or sound reasonable?

Seller used this on a vegetable farm, wants $4000 with the loader, reasonable or not?

Thanks for the info!

I purchased a 1961 MF65 gas a few years ago for $2,700. The tin is all in excellent shape, and it is mechanically sound (I doubt the pto had ever been used, and it never had a loader on it). It had 2100 hours on it at the time. Great tractor, and relatively easy to work on. I have since put a heavy loader on it, and filled the bucket numerous times with wet sandy soil with no problems at the front end. I did, however, move the power steering assembly from a MF65 diesel onto this tractor, and noticed that the entire diesel steering assembly was built sturdier. The built-in hydraulics are quite slow (but strong) for a loader ; a front-end add on pump would be preferable. The three point hitch has always worked for me, and I use it a lot.

I just bought a 65 Disel for 3500.00 seems to be a good tractor but was without a loader. 4000 with a loaded seems in line.

I watched two 165 diesels sell at an estate auction Saturday in Coolville, (southeastern) Ohio. Both were very good and had near-new 16.9x28 rear tires. The 8 speed (4126 hours) sold for $6500. Came with a well used loader mounted on it, front pump and tilt bucket. The other had a six speed (3671 hours) and went for $5300 with a brand new battery in it. Both tractors had the heavy cast iron power adjust rear wheels. Is it me or do those prices seem high?

Gas tractors with Continental engines tested 44 maximum belt horsepower. Pulled 32.6 at 75% load on drawbar. Early diesel tested 48.6 PTO maximum . Drawbar rated at 33.8 and maxxed out at 42.13. Later diesels had a couple more horses but both versions used the same size Perkins.

I have owned a 1963 MF65 for less than a year or so. It seems to be fairly reliable. I never have had any problems that I couldn't fix myself. These tractors are fairly easy to work on yourself if you are inclined. Parts are fairly easy to find if you need them.

It has 52hp drawbar. I don't have a front end loader on mine. The 3 point seems to be OK and I use it a lot.

The $4,000 seems high. I purchased mine for $2,800. It only has 2675 hours and is mechanically good although the sheet metal is kind of dented up.

Hope this helps out.
