I've been looking over the motor closer, and I am thinking it may be time for a rebuild. I bought a new headgasket and I am going to try to get it started anyway becouse I want to make sure everything else works before I invest in a rebuilt motor. I have a couple of questions...

The no. 3 cyl exhaust valve top (and some of intake valve too) and surrounding head area in the squish zone is very pitted. To the point where I lost some of the width of the seat and have a very very rough surface. This is also the cyl that has the grooved in the cyl wall. The others are fine. Do you know what may cause this?? My jet ski did this and it was from water I believe. Pre-ignition? If so, from what??? There were no obvious cracks in the head or breaks in the head gasket. There is lots of side to side play in the valve guides so I am sure the head need rebuilt anyway. From the looks of things there are not removable seats. I hope the head can be salvaged.

Can you take the sleeves out from the top of the block or do they need to come out from the bottom?? I was hoping to do a in-the-tractor overhaul. I have a manual and it looks like it can be done from what they say.

Thanks for any info you can provide. I have pics of the problems if anyone is interested.
