Let me start by saying I got this thing cheap. I just brought home a MF 35 loader/scraper w/ what I guess is a 3 cyl Perkins Diesel from what I read here. The PO said it would not turn over one day till they discovered a rag in the bell housing that was supposably stuck in the starter gear. But before this they had already took off the head. I took a quick looksy, saw a little water damage (rust on the cyl wall) in a couple of the cylinders from sitting the last year or so with the head off and covered up. It turned over easy so I bit the hook and brought her home. Figured I would just put it back together. I was just looking the cylinders over again and noticed some score marks on the center cyl. I would say they are light score marks, and smooth like it was ran that way for a while. The other two cyl are good. My question..... . Do you think I can get a way with putting it back together like it is and having it run?? I dont know diesels at all but I do know they need lots of compression to go. I looked at what it would take to get the engine out and it looks really heavy and I dont have a hoist. With the front loader there, It would really be most impossible with a cherry picker. Also, if I do have it rebuilt, or do it my self what does it cost and where would I get a rebuild kit? for someone to do a rebuild? I looked this site over and there are lots of kits avail but I dont see any for the diesel engines..... . Thanks for any info you may be able to provide..... ..

I think that you bought one of the finest little farm tractors ever built. The MF35 with the Perkins diesel is a great tractor with a great engine. The Perkins is quite forgiving for wear and compression loss. I just checked the price on the Perkins A3-152 engine kit and they sell for about $425 and includes almost everything. When you consider machine shop costs for the valve job of about $100 and the inevitable $200 - $800 for things you don't count on (clutch, front transmission seals, starter/generator work or possible injection pump or injector work) you can count on around a grand or more for the overhaul but this is still cheap. Try the re-assembly and see what you get. Most likely it will run and then you can evaluate what you want to do in re-furbishing your tractor. If you do overhaul, you'll want to take the loader off so that you can work on the engine properly. Congratulations
