I just replaced the carb. and exhaust/intake manifold on my TO-35 and now it runs ok for about 1 min. then starts coughing and choking and the exhaust pipe gets orange hot. What's wrong?

possibly a stopped up muffler or tailpipe also check for an over rich condition in the carb

: I took the advise of one respondent who thought it might be a stuck exhaust valve and I added some 2 cycle oil to the gas. Then I drove over a rough field and then I had had enough and was going to take it to the shop. It died with the front wheels on the trailer and the back on the ground. Had to charge the battery to get it started and when I did get it started it ran perfectly. Either it was afraid of going to the shop, or the oil in the gas freed up the exhaust valve. Thanks for your help.

You may have an exhaust valve sticking open. Sometimes a little 2-cycle oil in the fuel or a lead additive can help a sticking valve problem. However, I fail to see how this could be related to the work you just did. Give us a post on what you found the problem to be.

Try running the moter without the muffler installed. If the muffler was plugged the problem will go away. If the problem persists remove the manifolds and look into the passage ways with a small inspection mirror. What you are looking for is metal flashing left over from the casting process. Pay particular attention to the exhaust manifold as a small amount of flashing in the exaust gas passage way will work as a heat sink, thus explaining the cherry red manifold.

Sounds like lean mixture, or late timing.

Was it running OK before you put the new parts on?

Does it improve when you pull on the choke? If it does, carb may be lean, or there may be a restriction in fuel flow. Check adjustment of the High speed needle valve if fitted, and check for steady fuel flow from the carb drain plug.

Drop me a note if those don't work.

I agree with all the above and would also suggest checking for manifold or carb. gasket leaks with could be leaning the mixture. Since it is a new manifold, you might have leak over between the intake/exhaust causing a super-heat of the fuel as hot exhaust gas is drawn into the combustion mixture. Look for the possibility of a crack that only opens up as the manifold get hot. I have the same model tractor and will be interested in hearing how you make out.
