Would like to clean the grease out of the brake cavity and get the brakes working. Is there just one grease seal at the transmission or is there also one at the final drive. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have been down this road. Dave

Ken's right about the one seal, and taking one side apart at a time. Make sure you clean out the drain hole in the casting at the end of the drive shaft next to the small gear. This allows oil to return to the planetary gear drive. The main problem will be the brake shoes. I soaked mine i gas for a few days then used a air hose on them. I've heard of people relining them but I don't know where to get the material.

I'm sure there are other sources, but this is a place that has a lot of things, including brake linings and tools to reline them with. Don't expect them to send you a catalog though... They are selective. Everything is on the web site, though.

My Pony has the same problem. I haven't fixed it yet but found a book at an old dealership. It appears to me that the problem is the seal located behind the differential adjusting nuts. I hope to remove the housings that hold the adjusting nuts one side at a time, replace the seal then reinstall without changing the ring-gear pinion clearance. I don't think there are any seals at the outer end. Good luck, Ken

Talk about it and it happens! I fixed the seals in mine about two years ago. Now I'm rebuilding the engine and painting it. After I cleaned everything up and had it sitting in the garage I noticed a drip from the transmission case. Pulled it back apart and I have a bad groove worn in the drive shaft. I must have missed it or ignored it the first time. The original seal is .436 wide. This time I'm trying one that's .250 wide and I will put a .187 wide spacer in front of the seal. I hope this will put the rubber of the new seal on fresh shaft thats not worn. In a month or so I can tell you if it worked.
