I am having ignition trouble with my TO-35 (see post below) and in general wonder if the replacement electronic ignition set-up is the way to go. Kind of pricey but I have already had enough agravation to pay for one.

If you don't mind immediate startups, and cleaner spark plugs, and you are not so concerned about originality, then electronic ignitions are great.

But that would make it soooo un-original.

It must be some kind of simple problem.
You did replace the points and condensor?

The cam lobe isn't worn down smooth is it?

If you don't mind losing the originality? of your machine, go ahead.
I used them many years ago and found if they are a reputable brand, not junk, and fitted correctly they work very well. The points and distributor are about the most inefficient part of your engine. I had a "light beam" points replacement on a V8 Chev once that was fantastic. Better spark for easy starting and the dwell angle never changed. Very efficient. All the best, God Bless.

Sorry, but we are some here, who feel affection for our antique tractors, Tim.
You would never consult an antique shop to get info on replacing pearls with plastic, either, or would you?

Thyge, do you drink coffee with your pinkee stuck up the air? I appreciate a nice original or restoration as much as anybody but some of us live in the real world of day jobs, runny noses, education bills, retirement planning, mortgages, etc. I grew up on a farm and made a living riding tractors that a great many (myself included) would consider "collectable". Then, as now, I would make non-permanent alterations in a heart beat if it would increase the usability of the equipment. Also, I did not pick up on the fact that this was a "original only" discussion forum. I guess you have nothing to offer in the way of helpfull advice? Also, we are talking about replacing plastic with pearls, not the other way around.

I know what you mean.
I had a 1970 GM passenger car with points.
I got tired of replacing them (actually they would last for years) so I upgraded to an
aftermarket electronic igintion upgrade kit.
It used a plastic trigger wheel with 8 notches (one for each cylinder of course) to trigger the LED to photo cell link.
It worked great for me. It was still working when I sold the engine years later. :-)
