This is the first Massey Harris I've been around. How can I tell if this one is a true special? Also I would like to know if there is any place in the Mid-West where I can find a GOOD used one-piece manifold for it. Thanks.

If you check this site, you will find all sorts of info. Such as serial numbers by model of tractor. The site lists the 44 special serial numbers as such:

Year Starting Serial Number 1953 50001 1954 51364 1955 58067

Other things to look for are a 277 engine ( vs the 260 in the 44 ), most specials ( not all ) also had hydraulics, disc brakes, live PTO and cast wheels.

As far as a manifold, you could try Pete Lutzke in Elkhart Lake, WI @ 920-876-3548. Best to try 7am - Noon M-F, or anytime on the weekends.

LPG modesl appear to be the exception for engine size. Specials with LPG kept the 260 engine. That is what I've read and what my 44 special appears to be.

best way is engine size a 44special shoud have a 277 cid engine a 44 had a 260 if its the later years the engine id is left side on block front at the block and head gasket line other then the ser. tag on the frame barrel left side in front of clutch peddel
