I have found a potential tractor that I would like to buy... I need it on my 10 acres as a gereral use "homesead" type tractor.

The owner does not know a lot about this tractor, but here is what I have gathered:
Massey Ferguson 165 Perkins Diesel, 12 speeds, "good condition", tires 50%, has 1/2 inch steel skid plate on bottom, comes with: 2-aerators, 6' bushog, 6' box scraper, 6' rake, boom pole, & post hole digger.

The current owner says he can't "certify" the number of hours on it, and has not given me an estimate of the total hours. He is supposed to send me the serial numbers off the tractor before I drive 2 hours to see it.

Supposedly everything works, but it could use a paint job. He does not know if it has "Multi-Power", if it has a remote hyd unit, or the year it was made.

He is asking $5,500 for everything. I could get him to deliver it (4 hours round trip) to our place...

Does this sound like a good deal? I have been look at the Ford PowerMasters for the price to value ratio... But this seems like a better tractor for the money.

How many hours are reasonable for buying a used tractor of this model?

Is a MF 165 a good model to eventually put a front loader on versus a Ford 801, 2000 or 3000 series?

Thanks for any & all responses!

I have just gotten a 165 Diesel, seems to be plenty of tractor, and I like it so far, and your price seems pretty good. Dean has a good site with lots of info on the MF, tells what to check for before buying, etc. He's very knowledgeable on MF's, having been a dealer mechanic for several years. This should get you there. Good Luck

Buy it buy it buy it. If not give me his number.
I bought one in excellent cond. for 5k and didn't get all the attachments. It's a 52 hp tractor more than enough for 10 acres. I use mine on 25 and love it. Just be sure the multipower works.
The engine will run forever.

My gut feeling says its a good deal if it is in good condition...

So if it has "12 speeds" it is "Multi-Power"?

How do I know the Multi-Power is working properly?

Thanks for the reply!

When shifting from one gear to another(1st to second, second to third, forward to reverse, etc.) when in multipower high, sometimes it is extremely difficult to shift the transmission without first shifting to multipower low. If multipower is working, when you move the multipower lever from high to low, you can feel the transmission releasing the wheels and shifting gears is much easier. I can also detect multipower shifting from lo to high when moving the lever from high to low or visa versa when I am on the go.

Placing the multipower lever in low or leaving the tractor in multipower low when going down a hill can be extremely dangerous as the engine does not brake the tractor and it can run away with you.

If he is telling you it has 12 speeds it is multi-power. But I wonder why he wouldn't know this????
The multipower switch is located on the left side of the steering wheel. When going down a hill in multipower high the tractor brake itself using the engine in low the tractor takes off. This is what I was told before I bought mine, I tried it and it worked. If the multipower is broke it is either stuck in high or low. That's the easiest way I could tell maybe someone else has another test for it.

With the miltipower in high, if you stop on an incline, depressing the clutch will "lock the tractor" and it will not roll back when your foot is off the brake. You cannot change gears either.

The multipower is a leaver on the left side of the dash. High is up, Low is down.

My 165 also has a hydraulic PTO, completely independent of the clutch. It is really nice when operating the post hole digger.

The price is extremely attactive considering you are getting over $1000 worth of implements. Around here, most 165's go for $5500 - $6500 with no implements. 135's go for the same dollars, but you can do small jobs with a big tractor but you can't do big jobs with a small tractor.
