Hydraulic pressure is low on my 165 and the 3 point and hydraulic cylinder slows down after the tractor gets warmed up. I'm considering getting a repair kit and reworking the pump. I'm fairly good at general repairs but wanted to know if they're any quirks to installing a new kit, special tools, knowledge etc.

Thanks

HELLO THE HYD. PUMP ON YOUR MF165 IS NOT TO HARD TO REBUILD.I WOULD SUGGEST YOU REPLACE THE VALVE CHAMBERS RATHER REBUILD THEM.IT TAKES A SPECIAL TOOL TO CUT THE VALVE SEATS.AFTER MARKET CHAMBERS ARE AVALABLE AT A VARY REASONABLE PRICE.I WOULD GET 4 NEW PISTON RINGS A NEW RELIEF VALVE A NEW FILTER 2 NEW VALVE CHAMBERS.CHECK THE CONTROL VALVE FOR WEAR YOU MAY WONT TO CHANGE IT ALSO.THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO CHECK THE LIFT CYCLINDER.I ALWAYS ORDER THE LIFT COVER GASKET FOR MF285 IT IS NICE HEAVY GASKET THE MF165 IS VARY THIN AND HARD TO WORK WITH.GOOD LUCK LANCE

Lance: Hunting Club that I belong to is using a 165 that is owned by our landlord. It has some age on it and the hydralic problem sounds simular to the one described by The Hague. We don't have a manual that tells us what type of hydralic fluid should be used in the tractor. Our thought was that someone put the wrong fluid in it and the fluid breaks down as the tractor heats up. Any suggestions appreciated?

HELLO JOHN THE ONLY TIME I SEE A PROBLEM WITH HYD. FLUID IS WHEN SOME ONE PUTS TO HEAVY OF AN OIL IN THE HYD. SYSTEM SUCH AS 80W-90 GEAR OIL.IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THE WRONG OIL.I WOULD THINK YOU HAVE WEAR IN THE SYSTEM.IT MIGHT BE WORTH CHANGING THE HYD. OIL AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.YOU WANT TO USE TRACTOR HYD. FLUID .EACH OIL COMPANY CALLS IT SOMETHING DIFFERNT.DONT USE STRAIGHT HYDRAULIC FLUID. THIS TRACTOR HAS A HYDRAULIC FILTER BUT YOU CAN NOT CHANGE IT WITHOUT REMOVING THE HYDRAULIC LIFT COVER WHICH IS A BIG JOB.

GOOD LUCK LANCE

Thanks for the comments. This tractor has not been properly cared for for some time. I believe we need to invest in a manual. I've found several sites that seem to have them available.

MF PERMATRAN II or equivalent... little thicker and different blend than standard 41X hyd oil.

It has to meet the needs of the tranny and the hydraulics.

Most any knowlegable oil jobber should know what you need if you say Permatran. Also any MF dealer will have it.

Somebody posted a spec number awhile back, but I can't put my finger on it now.
