i'm looking at a massey 135 w/perkins 3cyl. diesel as an around the farm tractor for a small, startup horse farm in northern vermont. i'm not very familiar with the breed. would appreciate any suggestions on what to look/lookout for. seems to be in good shape, even the instrument lights work. live pto, pwr steering, dif. lock, etc.. don't seem to be any leaks. tin is straight.

have also looked at a couple of 165's at a dealership. not as well maintained. dealer says a 135 would bring as much as the 165's (he hasn't had his hands on a 135 in months). are 135's really that popular/good?

any ideas what a reasonable price is for my area?

thanks.

Sounds like a great tractor! In my experiance, it is the easiest diesel to start in cold weather. Even at asking price it would be a deal, at least in my neck of the woods (So. Indiana).I've even seen many gas models go for more money at auction. It's the perfect "utility" tractor.

The 135 diesel is a great tractor! Very popular, and hard to find in good condition at a good price. What does this fellow want for it? Does it have a loader?

The advantages are good sources for aftermarket parts, the engine is one of the easiest and least expensive to rebuild. Good fuel economy, good power.

MF135 DIESEL IS A VERY GOOD TRACTOR! I HAVE HAD MINE FOR A FEW YEARS, WITH NO TROUBLE. PRICE SOUNDS A BIT HIGH.

thanks bob,

no loader, but low hours (at least from my perspective) = 2827. anything in particular that i should watch out for. the guy is asking $5295, but i'm pretty certain he'll dicker. is that a fair price?

thanks for the assist.

jim

That is fairly high. The hours are OK if it has been well maintained. How are the tires? If the rears are worn out, it's too much money. A rear set installed is $700-800, incl tubes.

Have you driven the tractor?

It appears to be well maintained. The tires are about 70%. The seller is a guy who buys up tractors and "reconditions" them and then resells them. I haven't driven it yet, but that's next on my list (as well as hooking onto a 3pt. implement to check the lift).

Any suggestions on what else/how to check the beast's "weaknesses"?

I was thinking of going up to $5,000 max. Do you think that's still too high (for Vermont) if everything else checks out o.k.? What are they bringing else where?

Thanks,

Jim

Is this a UK or US tractor? The UK has two power steering cylinders, one at each front wheel, the US is in the steering box. If it is a UK, that is better. The UK has a heavier front end.

I would get engine hot and verify good oil pressure at operating temp, and slowest idle.
It would be best if you could actually do some work, ie mowing. That should check the drive and PTO clutches.

My '72 UK with MF32 loader, rebuilt engine, clutch, hyd pump is worth about $8500 in Washington State.

US/UK - I'm not certain. I'm going for another looksee in a couple of days.

The guy doesn't have any 3pth implements around to check lift, pto etc.

I think I may haul my 5' brush hog up there to check it out.

Thanks for the pricing info too.

Someone also recommended I check the Canadian side of the border. I hope to follow up on that lead.

Thanks again.

Jim

Believe it or not, I just got off the phone with that dealer about that very tractor. (Don't worry I won't buy it out from under you) I am also in No. VT and am in the market for a good utility tractor. Let me know how that Massey performed and also what leads you have found on the other side of the border. Thanks

Michael,

I appreciate the courtesy!! Checking out the other side of the border now. Lots of Masseys out there. Every size/price/description. Unfortunately, my French is not that great. I'm waiting for my interpreter to return from Montreal.

I'll keep you posted.

Jim
